Community Outreach
At Bayer China, we strive to combine our core business values with our social commitment to improve community well-being. Employees are the basis of our commercial success and the resource that carries out our mission "Science for a Better Life". In finding innovative ways to fulfill our social responsibilities, we also encourage our employees to extend a helping hand to the underserved population and to contribute towards the building up of a better society.
Special Olympics
Bayer is partnering with Special Olympics, an international movement dedicated to empowering intellectually disabled individuals through sports, to promote special athletes in China. Bayer China joined the "Adopt-a-School" initiative by supporting three special schools: Xicheng Peizhi School and Chongwen Peizhi School in Beijing, and Pudong New Area Special School in Shanghai. This program allows special education schools to purchase new sports equipment and conduct additional Special Olympics trainings for athletes of varying skill and ability levels as well as host small competitions. Bayer China's adopted schools have been at the forefront of the Special Olympics movement in China, and have been sending athletes to Special Olympics competitions worldwide. Shanghai played host to the 2007 Special Olympics Summer Games with Bayer as a firm supporter.
In helping special members of our community to find normalcy, Bayer has welcomed Special Olympics athletes from our special schools to join Bayer as interns in our offices in Beijing and Shanghai beginning June 2003. Echoing our motto "Action Above Words," Bayer China has engaged in various events with our partner special schools, involving Bayer employees from different parts of the company in events such as sports days and Community Day. Bayer's involvement in Special Olympics also offers opportunities for collaboration among partner organizations, such as the Special Olympics and Roots and Shoots (a program founded by Dr. Jane Goodall that engages and inspires youth through community service and service learning) bowling event.
The Special Olympics movement started in 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver organized the First International Special Olympics Games. Since then, millions of children and adults with mental disabilities have participated in Special Olympics worldwide. The history of Special Olympics in China traces back to 1985.

Beijing Hongdandan Education and Culture Exchange Center
Bayer supports the work of Beijing Hongdandan Education and Culture Exchange Center (Hongdandan), an NGO founded in July 2003 that is committed to helping disabled people in integrating and involving them into normalized, societal life.
Bayer began our cooperation with Hongdandan in July 2006, first via the weekly radio program "Through the Mind's Eye". This is a program initiated by Hongdandan and the Beijing People's Radio Station that is dedicated to serving visually impaired people and creating a barrier-free information environment. Every Sunday evening, audiences, many of whom are handicapped, are provided with basic information on air about movies in general and introduction to movies via audio tapes. "Through the Mind's Eye" also invites community leaders to come on air to share their thoughts and invite callers to dial in for real-time participation.
In accordance with our philosophy of putting words into action, Bayer also encourages employee volunteer participation in "telling" movies to blind people by describing the scenes in between dialogues. Bayer employees share their vision with the blind via this activity. On the second Saturday of each month, Bayer employees visit Hongdandan to tell a movie from a previously collected request list. Movies told have included domestic classics such as Shaolin Temple as well as Hollywood favorites like Forrest Gump and Titanic.
