R & D in China
The Shanghai Polymer Research and Development Center
In order to provide optimal support for the increasing number of customers in China and the whole AsiaPacific region, Bayer MaterialScience operates the Shanghai Polymer R&D Center, which compliments Bayer's integrated polymers production site in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. Together with other labs in the region, e.g. the Coatings laboratory in Shanghai or the Technical Regional Center in Singapore it is the core for Bayer Polymers' research and development of products and technologies in AsiaPacific.
The Technical Center was opened on November 2nd 2001 in conjunction with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Caojing site, in the presence of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. The building itself, finished in July 2001 with an impressive design, serves as an advertisement - with the walls built out of Bayer MaterialScience's polycarbonate Makrolon®, and the floors covered with one of the company's PU-coating systems.
The Center is a research and development platform focusing on the generation of new applications, materials and formulations. It is furthermore an assessment center for products and raw materials, which are being tested and improved here. The Center combines technical centers for products and applications in polyurethanes as well as in engineering plastics relevant industry segments, providing technical support for Bayer MaterialScience's integrated projects. Also, the PTC is a training and testing site for Bayer customers.
While research on recipes is the main interest for the polyurethane-related industry segments, the colleagues working with engineering plastics concentrate rather on optimizing production-procedures. Amongst others, a CD/DVD production machine has been installed for testing raw materials and to optimize the parameters for the production-process. The aim is to improve the quality of disks.
Using Computer Aided Engineering, the technicians also calculate the optimal construction processes for new appliances. Plastics products of all kinds sent to the PTC are being tested on flexibility, elasticity, impact strength, shore and ball hardness, heat distortion, melt flow and other parameters.
While the PTC is presently still concentrating its activities on the Chinese market, it is expected to take over more and more functions on a regional level.
